Padstow, Cornwall, also has a May Day folk custom involving the "Hobby Horse" figure, with attendants, parading around the town; with associated carryings-on (Minehead in fact has three rival such "Horses" doing their thing).

According to legend: in what seems a little like a game of "musical saints" -- Bodmin originated as a monastic settlement under the leadership of St. Guron. St. Petroc, the church dedicatee as above, then arrived and took over; with Guron thereupon departing southward to a new abode on the Channel coast, at St. Goran: the main settlement in which parish, is Gorran Haven.

We like our native British red squirrels in this game ! The species has been (re?)-introduced within the past ten years, to Caldey Island; also to Tresco Island in the Isles of Scilly.

The headland north of Moelfre was the site of the wreck in 1859 of the steam clipper The Royal Charter near the end of its voyage from Melbourne, Australia to Liverpool. A memorial on the headland and an obelisk in the churchyard of St Gallgo's Church, Llanallgo commemorate the 400 lives lost. The church was used as a temporary mortuary, and 140 of the victims are buried in the churchyard.

The community of Rhoscolyn includes a large part of the village of Four Mile Bridge, a little way to the north. A settlement with a name of considerable similarity to the latter is Sixmilebridge, Co. Clare (between Ennis and Limerick).

East Budleigh has associations with Sir Walter Raleigh; he was born in the near vicinity, and his parents' tombs are in East Budleigh's parish church. Raleigh lived in Ireland for a long spell, residing for much of that time in Youghal, Co. Cork.

Smerwick lies close by Mount Brandon (south-west of the mountain), which at an altitude of 952 metres is the eighth or ninth highest (depending which list you take as the authority) mountain in all of Ireland. The island's highest peak which is not in its south-western corner, is Lugnaquilla (925 m.) -- nearest settlement to which would seem to be Rathdangan, Co. Wicklow; a little way south-west of the eminence.

This section of the Irish coast suffered considerable damage from the tsunami caused by the "Great Lisbon Earthquake" on 1st November 1755. In Oughtmama, the Aughinish penisula became an island. On the other side of the bay in Galway, part of the city wall was washed away.

Galway city is, by population, the sixth largest city of the island of Ireland. Fifth largest -- comfortably exceeding Galway -- is Londonderry alias Derry.

Church Stretton also has a minor planet named after it (the respective serial numbers for such things are -- Coventry, 3009; C.S. 11626).

Close by Woodhead is Woodhead Reservoir, highest in the Longdendale Chain of six reservoirs. Lowest-but-one in that chain, which runs westward from Woodhead: is Bottoms Reservoir, near the town of Hadfield, Derbyshire.
