We learn that around the 17th century, the court based at Lancaster Castle sentenced more people to be hanged, than any other in the country outside London; earning Lancaster the nickname of "the Hanging Town". This would seem to make Lancaster a rival to Yorkshire settlements which have -- for similar reasons -- got some mention quite lately in this game, re the dictum "from Hull, Hell, and Halifax [place selected at random], Lord deliver us".
(At the risk of seeming at present, obsessed with Canada: were I to try to create a model railway based on Canadian railway practice: I would for sure call it the Hull, Hell, & Halifax [Hull, Quebec {just across the river from Ottawa}; Halifax, Nova Scotia; the other one, please yourselves]).
