Church Lench is the largest of five nearby villages all sharing the name of Lench. The others in descending order of size are Rous Lench, Atch Lench, Sheriffs Lench and Ab Lench.

Another place name derived from the Anglo-Saxon is -wich. Five of the -wich towns have historic associations with the production of salt - Droitwich, Middlewich, Nantwich, Northwich and the smallest - the Cheshire village of Leftwich.

Winsford is twinned with a settlement called Deuil-la-Barre (where they don't mine salt, as far as I know ) in the French departement of Val d'Oise. Ermont, in the same departement, is twinned with Banbury.

Tollard Royal at the southernmost extremity of Wiltshire, also has a parish church dedicated to St. Peter ad Vincula (a rare dedication in England).

The A272 road runs close by Littleton; also close by Cheriton, Hampshire (on the opposite, eastern side of Winchester).

There is another Ovington, separated by most of the length of England from this Hampshire one: on the River Tees in County Durham, some way east of Barnard Castle.

Wadworth in South Yorkshire also has a maypole and Mayday celebrations.

(It is pronounced ‘Wadderth’. The M18/A1M junction nearby is called the Wadworth Interchange and it gets pronounced correctly 50% of the time during traffic disruption bulletins).

An isolated building in Wadworth is said to be the setting of Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte; who briefly worked as a teacher in Halifax.

The English left arm spin bowler Johnny Briggs was born in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire on 3rd October 1862, the son of a professional club cricketer; he first played as a sub pro at the age of 13 (at Hornsea in Yorkshire). He played for Lancashire between 1879 and 1900 and remains the second-highest wicket-taker in the county's history after Brian Staham. In the early days of Test cricket, Briggs‘ batting was considered careless, although still very useful. He was the first bowler in Test cricket to take 100 wickets, and held the record of most wickets in Test cricket on two occasions, the first in 1895 and again from 1898 until 1904. He toured Australia a record six times, a feat only equalled by Colin Cowdrey. He died on 11th January 1902 (aged 39) in Heald Green.

Just west of Sutton-in-Ashfield is Brierley Forest Park and nature reserve; on the site of the former Brierley Colliery -- thus named, because of many of the miners who worked there having come from Brierley Hill, West Midlands. (There is no doubt some story behind this "migration".)

Twyford in Hampshire also lies on the line of the River Itchen.

This settlement has a preparatory school of considerable antiquity; attended by, as a boy, the poet Alexander Pope (1688 -- 1744). Pope was expelled from the school for writing a verse lampoon on one of the masters (the poet would seem to have been a cross-grained character, with a tendency to fall out with people). Pope lived and wrote for a while (1717 -- 18) staying at Harcourt House, Stanton Harcourt, Oxfordshire; a little way west of Oxford.

At Stanton Harcourt remains of both elephants and mammoths were found, dating from a geologically recent interglacial period and suggesting that they coexisted. Mammoth remains have also been found at Condover in Shropshire.

Whittlesford has a pub with the likely unique name of The Bees in the Wall. Windlesham, Surrey (near Camberley) has one just called the Bee. (Numerous hostelries up and down the country are called The Bees' Knees; but that would seem to be in the bathos department.)
