Sloley lies at the crossroads of a number of named but unclassified roads. One of these joins the B1150 which runs from Norwich to North Walsham via the village of Horstead.

According to Wiki, the above-bolded's parish -- Horstead with Stanninghall -- is popularly titled "the gateway to the Broads". I'd always considered this "tag" to apply to the rather bigger settlement of Wroxham, a couple of miles to the east. At all events -- both are on the River Bure, in its navigable reaches: one supposes that it's a matter of paying money and taking choice.

Eccleston used to have a pub called the Blue Anchor (now no more). East Aberthaw (South Glamorgan) still has a pub of that name. (And there's yet another in West Somerset: with the name borne also by its village, and the [heritage] railway station there.)

The two villages of West and East Aberthaw are separated by the River Thaw which, at 12.4 miles in length, is the longest river entirely in the Vale of Glamorgan. It's source is in the hills just south of the M4 Motorway near the village of Llanharry, Rhonda Cynon Taf. It flows in a generally south-eastern direction through the town of Cowbridge, then turns southward and reaches the Bristol Channel at Breaksea Point, south of Aberthaw.

Llanharry has for a very long time been associated with iron-ore mining -- never, if I have things rightly, a hugely prominent feature of Wales; for a while in the 20th century, the only iron mine in the Principality was at Llanharry. Eastwell, Leicestershire -- north of Melton Mowbray -- has also been a significant iron-mining venue.

The Anglican clergyman, and noted botanist, William Keble Martin (1877 -- 1969) was incumbent between 1934 and 1949, of the above-described church at Great Torrington. Earlier in his ministry, his parish was for a time a greatly contrasting one, in a far-removed part of England: the coal-mining town of Wath-upon-Dearne, Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham.

Perhaps surprisingly for a small, "Vicar Of Dibley" type of settlement, Binham hosted annual Pride events between 2014 and 2019, after which pandemic precautions knocked this Celebration of Diversity and Inclusion on the head - presumably temporarily.

However a Gay Pride festival did go ahead in September this year, in Birmingham.

Nobel prize-winning physicist and discoverer of the neutron Sir James Chadwick was educated at Manchester's Central Grammar School for Boys and graduated from the Victoria University of Manchester, where he studied under Sir Ernest Rutherford before following him to the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge.

The University of Manchester must have been a relatively convenient alma mater for the young Chadwick, having been born to parents of modest means in Bollington, Cheshire.

The Macclesfield Canal runs from a junction with the Peak Forest Canal at Marple in the north, in a generally southerly direction, through the towns of Bollington, Macclesfield and Congleton, to an end-on junction with the Hall Green Branch of the Trent and Mersey Canal.

Mottram-in- Longendale in Cheshire was also once administered by the ancient Hundred of Macclesfield.

A former resident of the above-bolded, was Kathy Staff, who played Nora Batty in the television comedy series Last of the Summer Wine; which was filmed in and around Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. (To the best of my memory, I have never seen an episode of this thing; but I'm weird in that essentially, I don't "do telly".)

Todmorden Cricket Club plays their home matches at Centre Vale in the town. Until the administrative border was changed in 1888, the historic border between Lancashire and Yorkshire ran through the centre of the ground. They are the only Yorkshire team in the Lancashire League. One of their opponents are Lowerhouse Cricket Club, who play at David Wren Way, Liverpool Road, Lowerhouse.

Lowerhouse boasts the Sycamore Farm Dining and Carvery. Similar naming: the Sycamore Inn in Matlock (there seems to be a chain of hostelries with that name, through the Peak District).

The British drama series Peak Practice was about a GP surgery in Cardale, a small fictional town in the Derbyshire Peak District. It used locations in Matlock, although the main village locations were Crich and nearby Fritchley.

Amongst sports people associated with Leek, the best known person is former five-time BDO World Professional Darts champion Eric John Bristow MBE (1957–2018), who was nicknamed "The Crafty Cockney". His first BDO championship win was in 1980, when it was held at the Jollees Cabaret Club, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent.
