Certain towns would seem, by popular tradition, to be obsessed with a particular animal: in Great Dawley, it would appear to be the pig. Quoting Wiki (often hard to resist): "Traditionally, Dawley residents would show their support for the Dawley Prize Band or other civic marches by placing their pigs on their walls. [Live pigs? would they stay put there? who knows?] The pig also features in the local dialect, with a romantic phrase apparently being, 'I wudna swop thee for a big black pig' ".
Pig-consciousness features, usually to a lesser extent, in many British Isles settlement names: for instance Swinford (Co. Mayo) -- the name a fairly literal translation of the Irish-language one meaning "ford of the mouth of the pig".
