Abergavenny likes to call itself the "Gateway to Wales" which seems OK although no doubt subject to dispute. Carlisle was once advertised by the LMS as the "Gateway to Scotland" which I can imagine wasn't too popular with anyone north of Gretna!

Moss Side contained The Reno nightclub, which was ran by the calypso musician Lord Kitchener, who arrived in the UK on the Empire Windrush, and performed the first two stanzas of his song “London is the Place for Me” on the dock at Tilbury, Essex

For a while, Daniel Defoe -- of Robinson Crusoe and A Tour through the Whole Island of Great Britain fame -- operated a brick and tile factory near Tilbury. Defoe was a Londoner; but some of his schooling was of the boarding kind, in Dorking.

The important archaeological site of Broadclough Dykes, near the above-bolded settlement; is one of a very large number of locations suggested, for the -- broadly acknowledged as historically authentic -- 10th-century battle of Brunanburh (Anglo-Saxons versus Gaels and Norsemen). One of the many alternatively suggested venues, is Bromborough in Cheshire.

Invergowrie is home to the Gows o' Gowrie - mysterious stones which, according to legend, were thrown around the village by the devil.

Another settlement with a Devil's Stone - which is ceremonially turned over each year on 5th November to prevent misfortune - is the Devon village of Shebbear.

Garstang, Lancashire, is another self-proclaimed Fair Trade Town; voluntarily supporting and working with, fair commerce with the poorer parts of the world.

St Thomas' Church, Garstang contains a bronze sculpture of Christ in the chancel, designed in 1974 by the English sculptor Josefina de Vasconcellos, who was born in Molesey in Surrey on 26th October 1904.

The artist Terence Cuneo (1907 -- 1996) lived for some time in Molesey. While a great deal of his work was on a theme to delight the likes of us -- he also painted much concerning other subjects; especially military-related material. There is a collection of his works in the Newarke House Museum in Leicester.

As with the majority of settlements of any size -- and some very small and obscure ones -- in the generally south-western parts of England (though Cornwall seems to have been outside the author's remit): Bournemouth features, under a pseudonym but recognisably itself, in Thomas Hardy's fiction. This is also true of Cerne Abbas, Dorset. (In Hardy-World, Bournemouth = Sandbourne; Cerne Abbas = Abbot's-Cernel.)

There is a smaller, and less-well-known, Uffington: located near Stamford, and at the south-westernmost extremity of Lincolnshire.

While Thomas Grey's Elegy in a Country Churchyard is most widely considered to have been inspired by the churchyard at Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire; there are various other villages / churchyards which have their supporters for having been the poet's inspiration-venue. Everdon is one such contender.

I think Crymlyn Burrows stretches the definition of a settlement - it seems to be an area of sand dunes part of which is now an industrial estate. However it does seem now to be attracting some housing development, so allowing the point to stretch ... on the other side of the Tennant Canal is the small village of Jersey Marine.

In July 1962 the chairman of the Rugeley UDC made the first ever transatlantic call via the Telstar satellite to the mayor of Western Springs, Illinois, with which town Rugeley is twinned. The call was transmitted via the Goonhilly earth station near Garras in Cornwall.
