Frampton-on-Severn, south-west of Gloucester; and Whitstable; would seem to be rivals for the distinction of having England's largest village green (Whitstable's title thereto maybe debatable, re -- village, or town?).

During WW2, a substantial number of RAF Stations was established around Britain.
Many closed immediately after the war, with the remaining number gradually diminishing over subsequent years.
RAF Quedgeley was one station which closed in 1995 with the land sold off for housing and commercial development.
A similar fate befell RAF Locking in 1998, at the Somerset village of Locking.

One of the major literary locations in Manchester is the John Rylands Research Institute and Library on Deansgate. The library, which opened to the public in 1900, was founded by Enriqueta Augustina Rylands in memory of her husband, the English entrepreneur and philanthropist John Rylands. He was born in Parr, St Helens on 7th February 1801 and died in Stretford on 11th December 1888 aged 87.

Two Mercian kings, Aethelbald and Wiglaf, are buried in the church of St Wystan at Repton. A later de facto monarch of Mercia, Aethelflead, Lady of the Mercians, is buried at St Oswald's priory in Gloucester.

St. Albans was also the site of two medieval battles -- admittedly Northampton's were further apart time-wise (1264; and 1461 [Wars of the Roses]); the St. Albans affrays, 1455 and '61, were both "Roses" stuff.

One of the very few other British towns to enjoy officially, the "Royal" prefix: is Royal Leamington Spa.

Royal Leamington Spa is named after the River Leam, which flows through the town. The River Leam rises at Heillidon Hill in the village and civil parish of Heillidon in Northamptonshire.

Whaley Bridge, in common with many other places, has a Well Dressing Weekend, although the origins of the tradition are obscure. The location identified most closely with well dressing is Tissington, Derbyshire, where six wells (Children's Well, Coffin Well, Hall Well, Hands Well, Town Well and Yew Tree Well) are decorated during the week of Ascension Sunday.

I can't resist this -- Wiki says approximately of Flagg, "halfway between the small market town of Bakewell, and the spa town of Buxton". Thoughts prompted of John Ruskin, some century-and-a-half ago, raging against the Midland Railway's ruining the Peak District landscape to build its line so as to enable rapid and convenient mutual visiting between fools resident in those respective towns... Ruskin died in 1900 at his country house a couple of miles from Coniston, Cumbria -- at a fairly decent distance from any loathsome railway...

An unlikely connection between Beddgelert and Canterbury -- via the long-lasting and much-loved strip-cartoon (dignified as such things go) with as hero, Rupert Bear. An earlier writer-and-illustrator thereof, lived in Beddgelert and "did much Rupert" there; his successor lived in Canterbury -- whence the one-time Canterbury Heritage Museum (now closed) having had a "Rupert" section.

Shippams fish and meat pastes are manufactured in Chichester. The "top-drawer" equivalent -- Gentleman's Relish aka Patum Peperium -- is manufactured in Elsenham, Essex.

Wicken Bonhunt ran a virtual balloon race last Easter on behalf of Clavering Benefice. This idea seems to have been quite popular over the last year. Royston Rotary Club held one in September, starting in Red Square, Moscow!

Harston near Cambridge, is another of quite a number of settlements which are humorously "badmouthed" in Rupert Brooke's poem Grantchester.
