According to a rather gruesome folk-tradition current in the above-bolded settlement: a local farmer once found one of his cows with her head stuck between the bars of a five-barred gate. Since the cow was worth less than would have been the cost of damaging the gate to free her, and then repairing it; he cut her head off in situ. The same tale is told at -- and concerning the thing's supposedly occurring in -- Tideswell (Derbyshire).
