The churchyard of St Peter's Church, Leckhampton contains a memorial to Dr Edward Wilson (1872 - 1912), who died on Captain Robert Scott's last Antarctic expedition. Dr Wilson studied for his Bachelor of Medicine degree at St George's Hospital Medical School, London and undertook mission work in the slums of Battersea in his spare time.

Battersea is probably most famous for its Dogs' and Cats' Home (formerly just Dogs' Home). Another venue giving succour to distressed / abandoned animals, is the -- in my opinion very charming -- Donkey Sanctuary outside Wroxall, Isle of Wight.

The Kirkharle estate church is dedicated to St Wilfred and is Grade 1 listed, with most of the building dating from 1336. The saint was born in Northumbria, c 633 or 634, and died in Oundle, Northamptonshire, c 709 or 710.

The Roote family of Badby played something of a role in the 17th-century English settling in New England, North America. A significant contribution to the venture was made by people from Wisbech, Cambridgeshire (also on the River Nene, but that's by the way, here.)
