The Tamar Bridge, which links Saltash (and the rest of Cornwall) to Plymouth and points east, was opened in 1959. It was built by the Darlington based Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Co.

Harnham Hill is the location of a Freeview broadcast TV transmitter providing local coverage. A similar but more powerful transmitter at Hannington in Hampshire also provides some coverage in the area.

A large prehistoric stone in Saint John parish, Jersey, is called the "Centre Stone" because of its being supposed locally to mark the island's central point -- modern geographical calculations disagree. On associated lines, Haltwhistle (Northumberland) claims to be at the geographical centre of the UK; various commentators are sceptical concerning this claim.

Ugly events involving interaction between local people, and navvies employed on construction in the neighbourhood, also occurred in Sampford Peverell (Devon). (Railway navvies at the Yorkshire settlement; at the Devon one, some sixty years earlier, they were digging a canal.)

Part of the Old Rectory in Sampford (demolished in 1836 for some surprisingly late canal construction) was medieval, built as a manor house for Margaret Beaufort, the formidable ma of Henry VII. She was born at Bletsoe Castle in the Bedfordshire village of Bletsoe.

Bletsoe is a village and civil parish in Befordshire and is on the A6. This is one of the main historic north–south roads in England, and runs from Luton in Bedfordshire to Carlisle in Cumbria, although it formerly started at a junction with the A1 at Barnet.

The journalist and broadcaster Gilbert Harding (1907-1960), a stalwart of 'What's My Line?' and, in a gentler, kinder era, known as 'the rudest man on television', was born in Hereford. For much of his later life he lived in Twickenham.

A few centuries earlier, the poet Alexander Pope also lived in Twickenham for the later part of his life; in fact died there, and is buried in St. Mary's Church there. He spent some of his childhood in Binfield, Berkshire.
