Cruden Bay has a long, unspoiled, beach, which was made famous by the Norwegian aviator Tryggve Gran who made the first solo flight across the North Sea from there to Jaeren, near Stavanger, Norway, on 30th July 1914. During the First World War, Tryggve Gran was commissioned into the Royal Flying Corps and was posted to 70 Squadron in March 1917. The squadron had been formed on 22nd April 1916 at Farnborough, and was equipped with the Sopwith Camel when it was posted to France in 1917.
