In Calverley, the 'Calverley Cut' is a narrow, vertical-sided cut through a rocky hillside. I have not been able to find out the reason for making the cut. A similar cut, made to form a viable new harbour, was created in the 18th century at Seaton Sluice in Northumberland.

Also in East Ayrshire -- about 15 miles north-east of the abovementioned -- is the village of Moscow. Both villages named after cities in foreign parts: that on the River Doon, after Patna in Bihar, India: so named by its 1802 founder William Fullarton, whose father had worked for the East India Company. Moscow had previously had a similar-sounding name (derivation, and from what language, uncertain); but was officially titled "Moscow" in 1812, to commemorate Napoleon's retreat from the eponymous city. The Ayrshire Moscow lies on a stream called the Volga Burn; Moscow in Russia isn't on the River Volga -- but ah, well...

Edenham, Lincolnshire -- near Little Bytham -- would seem to have enough in common name-wise with the place near Kelso, to make the Settlement Association grade. Per Wiki, the Scottish Ednam derives its name from the Anglo-Saxon (we're near the Border, after all) "Edenham" = town on the Eden Water. Re the Lincolnshire village; Wiki says "ham" = homestead, with for the "Eden" part, assorted different suggestions; plus mentioning that the River Glen, on which the village is situated, "is sometimes called the 'Eden', by a process of back-formation from the name of the village." Crazy !

(Off-quiz-topic; but while knowing the hymn, I'd never before heard of its author. Can't help wondering whether his waggish and / or irreligious friends made a point of "winding him up" by addressing him: "Lead, kindly Lyte". Have checked -- per Wiki, John Henry Newman wrote that hymn in 1833: so my scenario could have happened in the latter part of Lyte's life.)
