In 1864, John Isaac Thorneycroft, founder of the John I Thorneycroft & Co. shipbuilding company, established a yard at Church Wharf at the west end of Chiswick Mall. The shipyard built the first naval destroyer, HMS Daring in 1893. To cater for the increasing size of warships, Thornycroft & Co. moved its shipyard to Woolston, Southamption in 1909.

The source of the River Itchen is situated just south of the village of Cheriton. Initially the river flows north, through the villages of Cheriton and Tichborne, before joining up with one of its tributaries, the River Aire, which rises at a spring in the parish of Bishop's Sutton.

Hannah Hauxwell, who became famous through a number of Yorkshire Television documentaries about her life, farmed near Cotherstone and in 1988 moved to the village itself. She died in West Auckland in January 2018.

The Electric Palace Cinema, Harwich is one of the oldest purpose-built cinemas to survive complete with its silent screen, original projection room and ornamental frontage still intact. It was designed by the architect Harold Ridley Hooper of Ipswich, Suffolk, and opened in November 1911. Harold Hooper also designed Belstead House, a Grade II Listed 16th / 17th Century house in Sprites Lane, Pinewood, Suffolk.
