The Exeter Ship Canal was first constructed by John Trew in about 1566 and was cut to bypass the St James' Weir. This had been built across the River Exe at Duckes Marsh to provide a leat to a mill constructed just below the confluence of the Northbrook, in what became the village of Countess Weir. The weir had the effect of preventing water-born trade in the City of Exeter and forced boats to load and unload at Topsham from where the Earls of Devon were able to exact large tolls to transport goods to and from Exeter.

There is a memorial window to Father Thomas Byles in St Helens Catholic Church, Chipping Ongar. He was parish priest in Chipping Ongar from 1905 and perished on the RMS Titanic in 1912, refusing to leave in a lifeboat and staying to pray with the remaining passengers. Born in Leeds in 1870, he attended Leamington College and Rossall School, Fleetwood, Lancashire.
