In the late 18th century, the village was home to poet Jane Taylor (1783 - 1824), and it may have been while living in Shilling Street, Lavenham that she wrote the poem The Star, from which the lyrics for the nursery rhyme Twinkle Twinkle Little Star are taken. Colchester and Ongar, both in Essex, also have claims to be the site of composition of the poem.

Prickwillow was originally on the banks of the River Great Ouse, but is now on the banks of the River Lark since the re-organisation of the river system. The River Lark rises at Bradfield Combust in Suffolk.

Woolpit was also once administered by the ancient Hundred of Thedwestry.

Richard Makilwaine Phipson replaced the tower and spire at St Mary's Church, Woolpit after they were destroyed by lightning in the 1850s. Despite his use of a style typical of Northamptonshire, rather than Suffolk, his spire is largely accepted as a success by most authorities, unlike his spire at St Andrew's Church, Great Finborough, which is sometimes dubbed "Thunderbird One" after the space rescue vehicle.

The Bog Race is a key part of village life. The race starts at the pub, The Chestnut Horse, where 15 or so men from Haughley and Great Finborough get considerably drunk and are taken to a nearby farm, Boyton Hall, where they have to race over the fields, about a mile, to get to the pub with the scroll. The first man at the pub with the scroll wins and is declared the winner over-all and then, that village has won for that year. Another village that participates in a game with their neighbouring village is Hallaton, Leicestershire.

Bottle-kicking is an old Leicestershire custom that takes place in the village of Hallaton each Easter Monday. Records of bottle-kicking date to the late 18th century, but the custom is thought to originate much earlier, from before the Christian era.

Sible Hedingham was the birthplace of Samuel Wilbore, a religious dissenter and one of the founders of Portsmouth Colony in Rhode Island in 1638.
Another of Portsmouth Colony's founders was William Coddington, who was born in Lincolnshire at Marston.
