We can't visit Wylam without mentioning George Stephenson (often referred to as the "Father of Railways") who was, of course, born here. Less well known is that he is buried at Holy Trinity, Chesterfield.

His memorial slab is very plain and reads "George Stephenson - 1781 to 1848 - Railway Pioneer - First President of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers".
