Willenhall was once famous for the manufacture of locks and was the home of the National Amalgamated Lock, Latch and Key Smiths' Trade Society, which in 1924 amalgamated with the Wednesfield Spring Trap Makers' Society to form the National Union of Lock and Metal Workers. In 2004 the National Union of Lock and Metal Workers was absorbed by the Transport and General Workers Union. In 2007 the T&GWU amalgamated with Amicus to form Unite.

Staffordshire oatcakes are a savoury pancake made from oatmeal, flour & yeast, and a local speciality to Stoke-on-Trent & surrounding areas. Dating back to the 18th century, they became a staple diet of pottery workers in the 19th century.

In the 20th century, speciality oatcake shops have emerged around the area. Among these are Sneyd Oatcakes in Sneyd Green and Fillers Oatcakes in Newcastle-under-Lyme.
