The Woolwich foot tunnel crosses under the River Thames from Woolwich in the Royal Borough of Greenwich to North Woolwich in the London Borough of Newham.

Until 1965 North Woolwich used to be administratively part of the Borough of Woolwich and an anomaly at county level. In a similar way Coleshill in Buckinghamshire was until 1844 a detached part of Hertfordshire.

RRS Discovery, currently moored at Discovery Point in Dundee was, for many years, the static training ship for the Sea Scouts in London, and was kept at a mooring on the Victoria Embankment near Westminster Bridge. She became the headquarters of the Westminster Sea Cadet Corps which, in the 1980s, relocated to onshore premises in Pimlico, London.

Pimlico was laid out and much of it built by the master builder Thomas Cubitt. He built many other important areas and buildings including Osborne House at East Cowes on the Isle of Wight.

East Cowes is linked to its sister town, Cowes, by a chain ferry. On a similar but smaller scale, a hand-operated chain ferry links Trowlock Island in the River Thames to the Middlesex mainland at Teddington.

I'm reasonably familiar with the NPL at Teddington, but didn't know there was a branch in Huddersfield. You learn something useful every day!

Casterbridge, the fictional town in Thomas Hardy's novel The Mayor of Casterbridge, is based on Dorchester.
Tess of the d'Urbervilles, another of Hardy's novels, is set in fictional Marlott - based on the Dorset settlement of Marnhull.

Naas in County Kildare is another settlement where the blood-sport of bull baiting was once practised.

Private John Lyons VC (1824 – 1867) was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross whilst serving with the 19th Regiment of Foot (later The Yorkshire Regiment - Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own), British Army, during the Crimean War. On 10th June 1855 at Sebastopol, in the Crimean Peninsula, Private Lyons picked up a live shell which had fallen among the guard of the trenches, and threw it over the parapet, thus saving many lives. He later served in the Indian Mutiny and achieved the rank of Corporal. He died in Naas, County Kildare on 20th April 1867. His Victoria Cross is displayed at the Green Howards Museum at Richmond, Yorkshire.
