Corporal William Wilson Allen, who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions at the Battle of Rorke's Drift on 22nd / 23rd January 1879, was born at Kyloe in 1843. He died of influenza on 12th March 1890 in Monmouth at the age of 46, and is buried at Monmouth Cemetery, Monmouthshire.
