Lieutenant Colonel Frank Bourne, OBE, DCM, who was one of the defenders of Rorke's Drift during the Anglo Zulu War in 1879 lived in later life in Beckenham and died there on 8th May 1945, aged 91, and is buried in Beckenham Crematorium and Cemetery. He was born on 27th April 1854 in Balcombe, Sussex, and enlisted in the Army at Reigate on 18th December 1872, aged 18 years 8 months.

Seaton Delaval Hall was built for the local landowner and developer Admiral George Delaval on the outskirts of Seaton Sluice by Sir John Vanbrugh between 1718 and 1729. Another of Vanburgh's creations is Kings Weston House, which is in Kings Weston Lane, Kingsweston, Bristol.

Sir William Wynter, admiral and author of the plan to use fireships to drive the Armada fleet away from its moorings off Gravelines, was once the owner of the Kings Weston estate. He was born in Brecon in 1521.
