St Ives Town FC play in the Cornwall Combination, and play their home matches at the Saltings, which is between the village and Lelant Saltings railway station. One of their opponents in the league is Penryn Athletic FC, who play at Kernick Road, Penryn.

Lelant is on the Hayle Estuary where there is a RSPB nature reserve. The RSPB also have one on the Somerset Levels, West Sedgemoor, near Curry Rivel

Bere Alston elected two members to the Unreformed House of Commons prior to the Reform Act of 1832. It's MPs included Sir George Beaumont, 7th Baronet. Unsurprisingly, he doesn't seem to have had much of a connection with the village, having been born in Dunmow, Essex.

Richard Austen ("RAB") Butler (1902–1982) was MP for Saffron Walden between 1929 and 1965, before being created Baron Butler of Saffron Walden. He died of colon cancer in March 1982 at Great Yeldham, Essex and is buried in the churchyard of the parish church of St Mary the Virgin in Saffron Walden.

Boston RFC is based at the Princess Royal Arena, Boston. The club play in the Midlands 4 East (North) Division of the English League system. One of the clubs that they have played this season is Mellish RFC, who play at the War Memorial Ground, Arnold, Nottingham.
