Sir Sydney Camm, designer of the Hawker Hurricane, was born on 5th August 1893 at No. 10 Alma Road, Windsor. A memorial in the form of a replica Hawker Hurricane is displayed near Baths Island, close to where the Slough to Windsor & Eton railway line crosses the River Thames. He died on 12th March 1966 while playing golf at the Richmond Golf Course aged 72 and he was buried in Long Ditton.

Elmbridge exists in the present day as one the government's new fangled areas set up in the mid seventies when boundaries were changed and new tiers of local government were put in place. Throughout this Esher remains and has a racecourse of the same name.
