Richard Lewis Hearne (1908–1979) the actor, comedian, producer and writer best known for his stage and television character "Mr Pastry" was born in Norwich. He died in Bearsted, Kent, in 1979, aged 71, and is buried in the churchyard in the village of St. Mary's Platt, near Borough Green in Kent.

Cold Blow, a thatched house on the outskirts of Oare, was built in 1921-22 to designs of Clough Williams-Ellis. He also designed a number of buildings in Cumnor.
