Heysham also had a large outdoor karting track on Heysham Head where racing legend Nigel Mansell used to race in his teenage years. He was, however, born on 8 August 1953 in Upton-upon-Severn, Worcestershire.

In 1846 David Balfour inherited the estate and in 1847 he recruited an Edinburgh architect, David Bryce, to transform Cliffdale House into the Scottish Baronial Balfour Castle. David Bryce was also responsible for the design of Glenapp Castle, Ballantrae, Ayrshire in 1870.

The First Barons' War caused significant destruction to Northampton. The barons besieged Northampton Castle in protest at King John's oppression of his subjects. In retaliation, royalist forces destroyed a large part of the town. When the forces of King Henry III overran the supporters of Simon de Montfort, the Second Barons' War broke out.

De Montfort now has a university named after him in Leicester.
