Rugby school is noted for its invention of the game of rugby football.
Twickenham is noted for it's Rugby stadium and for being the location of the headquarters of the Rugby Football Union.

A trip to Sutton-on-Sea was the subject of a song by Doc Cox/Ivor Biggun, who went to school in Retford.

Macclesfield also had what is probably now incorrectly known as a lunatic asylum.

Indeed, when I was at primary school in the 1960s in what is now Tameside, if you did or said anything particularly stupid, the other kids said, "You should be in Macclesfield." or, "You'll be going to Macclesfield soon."

EDIT: Now it's a desirable residential location!

Bow Church bells are traditionally supposed to be in hearing distance for a person to be a Cockney when they are born. Apparently, the darts player Eric Bristow - the 'Crafty Cockney' - lives or lived in Leek.
