Uppermill, a neighbouring village, was also originally in the West Riding of Yorkshire before being moved to the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham, Greater Manchester.

Hewlett Johnson, later known as the "Red Dean" or Canterbury, was vicar of Altrincham in the 1920s.
He was born in Kersal.
