Barnsley was where the ex-NUM president Arthur Scargill was born; a predecessor, Joe Gormley was born in Wigan.

Also, Colin Welland was born in Wigan. He played the English teacher in Kes, which was filmed in Barnsley.

Lonnie Donegan was born in Bridgeton, Glasgow. One of his hits was, 'My Old Man's a Dustman'. The mountain behind Coniston, whose lower slopes incorporate the copper mines Paul referred to, is called Coniston Old Man.

Stirling also has a football ground pronounced Anfield, though spelt Annfield.
