Bradford Cathedral was extended in the 1950s/60s to designs by Sir Edward Maufe, who is best known for designing Guildford Cathedral. Maufe was a Yorkshireman though, born in Ilkley in 1882, and his mother Maude was the neice of Sir Titus Salt, who founded Saltaire.

Port Sunlight was another settlement where a philanthropic employer caused good quality housing to be built for his workforce.

Launceston is another West Country settlement that was chosen by the Normans to erect a motte-and-bailey castle.

One mile to the east of Launceston is the Stourscombe SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), listed for being the best inland exposure of Upper Devonian period rocks in South West England. The name and age of the Devonian geological era was settled by Adam Sedgwick, one of the founders of geology as a science, in the 1830s. He was born in Dent, Yorkshire.

Horbury in West Yorkshire also has a microbrewery.

Horbury has a population of around 10,000 souls, no longer has a railway station and stands on the River Calder. Padiham has a population of circa 10,000, no longer has a railway station and stands upon the Lancashire Calder.

Tallington in Lincolnshire is another settlement where sand extraction has taken place.

The architect William Bassett-Smith was responsible for building work at many churches including the one at Whitton. Another church he built was at Fulmodeston-cum-Croxton in Norfolk.

Heckington in the North Kesteven district of Lincolnshire is another settlement where a Tower Mill was built.

Can't help noticing that Abi Titmuss is a notable residence of Heckington, but I'm not going down that road.....

In 1982 the 2.8 mile-long Heckington Bypass was opened by Linda Chalker MP, who was, at the time, a junior Transport Minister. She lost her seat in the 1992 General Election and was subsequently granted a life peerage as Baroness Chalker of Wallasey.

The name of Wallasey originates from the Germanic word Walha, meaning stranger or foreigner. The names of many towns and villages throughout the North and West of England derive from this, such as Walsden in West Yorkshire.

Littleborough also lies on the line of the Rochdale Canal.

Just like the settlement of Littleborough in Nottinghamhshire there is evidence of Roman occupation of this place. There is also evidence of earlier inhabitants with the finding of an Iron Age bracelet made of shale from Kimmeridge, Dorset.

Osmington Mills in Dorset is another settlement on the Jurassic Coast area.

I suppose John Constable is more popularly-known for his paintings of the landscape around Dedham in Essex.

Bradford on Avon is famous for its Grade I listed Town Bridge, upon which stands a chapel. St Ives in Huntingdonshire is another beautiful and historic town with a famed chapel on a bridge. (The chapel was used as a bawdy house for a time in the 18th Century - what would Cromwell have to say? )
