During the Second World War, a meeting took place at the Swan & Royal Hotel in Clitheroe, where Rover and Rolls-Royce met with various local engineers whilst developing the jet engine. Part of the legacy of this is that Whittle Close in the town is named after Frank Whittle, the ultimate inventor of the product.

After Whittle's death in 1996, his body was put to rest in Cranwell, near Sleaford.

There is no Lake Windermere, a common mistake to make. It is, of course, simply Windermere. There is only one lake in the Lake District, that being Bassenthwaite Lake. All others are either meres, or waters. So Windermere is the name of the body of water and a town, with the town named for the mere it stands beside. Stewartby lake is, as is easy to discover,named after the town and is not a real lake at all, instead being man made through clay extraction.
