Pevensey Bay was the site of a Norman wooden castle, as was Bowdon (Watch Hill Castle).
Bury St Edmunds is another cathedral town: Rochester only became one in 1998 when the city authorities neglected to create charter trustees after a local government merger, and it duly lost its legal status
Rochester has had a cathedral since 604, and is England's second oldest. However did the city authorities lose its cathedral city status?
Brockley.....Newton St Cyres is on the Tarka Line. Henry Williamson, author of Tarka the Otter, was born in Brockley.
Forgetfulness! - they didn't create a trustees group to maintain the city charter when Rochester was merged into a new 'Medway' Unitary Authority.

#1849 preceded #1850 of Carlisle as there is no connection with Bedford being made
