Portsmouth is the main settlement on Portsea Island, a very highly densely populated island (the most densely populated island in the country I believe). At the other end of the scale is the Ministry of Defence -controlled Foulness Island, whose most "prominent" settlement) goes by the name of Courtsend.

The entire island has an area of 9.195 square miles - and a resident population of 212.

A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England
Badminton, another sport.

Chipping Sodbury in Gloucestershire has Badminton Park nearby, which is the place where Badminton House is situated. This is the home of the Duke of Beaufort and the estate of the house covers the settlements of both Great Badminton and Little Badminton and was where Queen Mary and her household stayed during the Second World War.. The link to sporting events on this thread follows as the Badminton Horse Trials are held in the grounds of Badminton Park.

Truro was also represented in the original Transport Tycoon game as a location that could be served in the south-west of England.

Penzance was famously the home base of a team of Pirates in a popular light opera by Gilbert & Sullivan. Another popular base for pirates is Somalia- oh, no, sorry, that's not the Uk, is it. Another place in the West Country whose name appeares in a work of popular culture is Westward Ho!.

Wickford also has a name that can be split into two entirely unrelated words (unless being four-letter nouns counts ).

also sounds like it could have been an American scandal, but, AFAIK, it wasn't!
