Whittlesey has some renown for its "Straw Bear" folk custom: annually on the Tuesday following the first Monday after Twelfth Night (I think I've got that right), a person disguised in a bulky straw costume with a generally bear-like outline, is paraded through the town's streets amid general jollifications. The midwinter-ceremony-with-straw-suits theme, features also in parts of Ireland: parades and fun in general on December 26th, involving "strawboys" -- chaps dressed disguise-wise in "masks and straw suits and colourful motley clothing"; with a wren (the bird) also being part of things. Dingle, Co. Kerry, has some renown as a prominent site of day-after-Christmas doings of this kind.

617 Squadron, Royal Air Force flew from RAF Lossiemouth during Operation Catechism to sink the German battleship Tirpitz in 1944. The squadron was formed in 1943 at RAF Scampton, which is near the village of the same name.

What are both of us doing still making postings after 0300 hours.....:rolleyes:

My sleeping-and-waking times seem to be completely crazy just at present. Am suspecting self of having offended Macbeth, who has accordingly "murdered sleep" for me ...

Goltho in Lincolnshire was also once under the jurisdiction of the Lincoln Poor Law Union.

Goltho is nowadays in the parish of neighbouring Rand. Also with a name suggestive of faraway goldfields: is California, Norfolk -- some miles north of Great Yarmouth.

There are less than 200 Round Tower churches remaining in England. Most of these are located in Norfolk, including one at Burgh Castle.

A handful of specimens can be found south of the Thames - for example St. John's Church at Piddinghoe, East Sussex.

St. John's Church, Piddinghoe contains two sets of stained glass windows made by Messrs Wailes and Strang of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Another church with their work is St Boniface Church, Bonchurch in the Isle of Wight.

Wight's river the Eastern Yar (not to be confused with the much shorter Western Yar, which all-but isolates the western extremity of the island), rises near Niton. The River Medina (south to north through the middle of the island, reaching the Solent at Cowes) rises at a point just a couple of miles north-westward, at Chale Green.

The novelist and political / social commentator J.B. Priestley (1894 -- 1984) lived for a while in the 1940s / 50s, in Brook House -- the "Big House" of Brook village. He was born in Manningham, Bradford, West Yorkshire.

On 24 / 12 / 1944, a spot very near Spennymore was hit (one gathers, doing minimal harm to any person) by a V1 flying bomb, air-launched from a German aircraft -- the furthest-north landing in the war, of any V1. It would appear to have been, intendedly, aimed at Manchester. This would seem to be badly off-course; but one can imagine the perpetrator protesting: "I'm just an ignorant Hun -- Spenchester, Mannymore, how should I know one northern-English industrial hell-hole from another?"

St Ethelbert's Church, Thurton, has a remarkable collection of continental and English glass. It was brought here in 1826, supplied and installed by Samuel Yarrington for the Beauchamp-Proctor family of Langley Hall. Another church with work by Samuel Yarrington is SS Gervasius and Protasius, Little Plumstead - incidentally, the only church in England dedicated to these saints.

There is another, very different Plumstead somewhat further south than the Norfolk one as above: in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, just south of the Thames.

(My italics above -- is Gervasius the saint's name from which is derived the English male Christian name Gervase? If so: it's not a particularly common name in this country, but not hugely rare either -- surprising to discover that there's only this one church dedication (and that shared) in England, to the saint concerned.

Crossness has a nature reserve; excellent for wildlife of many kinds, including the now rare water vole. A species which I have referred to before in the game, in the following connection: in the much-loved tale The Wind In The Willows by Kenneth Grahame (1859 -- 1932) -- one of the chief characters, Ratty, is described as a "water rat"; but students of the story tend to the opinion that he is really a water vole. Grahame died in Pangbourne, Berkshire -- on his beloved Thames.

The singer / songwriter Kate Bush (of whom I'm no fan -- but my musical tastes are narrow in the extreme) lived in Sulhamstead for a decade-plus. She was born in Bexleyheath, Kent.
