Winchester gives its name, "in a sort of way", to a suburb of Paris: this arising from John of Pontoise, Bishop of Winchester, having built a manor there at the end of the 13th century. The name here has been "Frenchified" almost out of recognition, to Bicetre -- when in Paris way back, that name came to my notice; the English town which it suggested to me, was Bicester. I would absolutely not have thought of Winchester; but after all, we and the French have been butchering each other's languages for many hundreds of years. There is a similar, though less "mangled" situation, involving the seaside resort, in the departement of Somme, called alternatively Cayeux-sur-Mer; or Cayeux plus the name of Brighton, not all that far away on the other side of the Channel. More often than not, there occurs the local mis-spelling, "Cayeux-Brigthon".
