17th century Scottish privateer and naval officer Alexander Selkirk - the real life inspiration for the fictitious Robinson Crusoe - was born in Lower Largo. He married widowed innkeeper Frances Candis while on a visit to Plymouth in Devon.

Twentieth century writer and poet Philip Larkin was for many years the librarian at the University of Hull, in which city he died. He was born in 1922 at Radford, near Coventry.

There is something of an oddity by which Coventry and Leamington Spa -- large towns about ten miles apart -- each have a neighboring village / now-largely- become-suburb, strongly resembling each other name-wise: for Coventry, Radford, as above; for Leamington, Radford Semele. (Even more oddly, Radford and Radford S., each has a church dedicated to St. Nicholas.)

There is a horse sanctuary / rescue centre near Butlers Marston; there is another, at Bransby, Lincolnshire -- in between Lincoln and Gainsborough.

According to Cornish legend, the Mermaid of Zennor was a mysterious, beautiful, dulcet-toned woman who infrequently attended services at St. Senara's Church in Zennor.

According to Irish folklore, a version of a mermaid - a merrow - was said to have been involved in a "mixed" marriage with a local fisherman and produced descendents with fish-like scaly skins in the Co. Cork town of Bantry.

Glengarriff (Co. Cork) has a near-namesake in Northern Ireland: Glenariff, Co. Antrim -- one of the scenically acclaimed Glens of Antrim: the glen reaches the sea at the village of Glenariff alias Waterfoot.

In 2007 and 2012, Broughshane won the 'Champion of Champions' award in the RHS Britain in Bloom competition. Another village in County Antrim, Ahoghill, also won the same award in 2016.

Ahoghill's name derives from the Irish-language wording for "plain -- or field -- of the yew forest". Another settlement with a name associated with this variety of tree (this time, via the English word) is Bells Yew Green, East Sussex (just south of Tunbridge Wells).

Close by Rusthall is a natural rock formation of some local note, called Toad Rock because of its visual resemblance to a sitting toad. Cheddar, Somerset, has comparably, the Lion Rock: considered to look like a crouching lion. (I learn that to describe such phenomena -- natural rock "sculptures", particularly when resembling living creatures -- there is a newish word, "mimetolith"; which has yet to make it into most dictionaries.)

Dolphinholme worsted mill was the site of what is reputed to be the first gas works in the world, built in 1811 and designed by Samuel Clegg. Clegg was apprenticed to Boulton and Watt at their Soho Works, Birmingham and later became involved in a number of different projects including the atmospheric railway.

Confectionary company George Bassett & Co. is well-known as a manufacturer of Everton Mints (not to mention Liquorice Allsorts, Murray Mints and Wine Gums).

Perhaps surprisingly, Bassett's Everton Mints are not made on Merseyside, but in the Sheffield suburb of Owlerton.

The organ in St Mary's Church, Disley, was built by Samuel Renn in 1836, although it has been restored several times and the only original parts are the organ case and some stops. A complete organ by him is in St Mary and All Saints Church in the village of Great Budworth, Cheshire which was installed in 1839.

Daresbury holds an annual dance festival. There also takes place annually near Market Harborough, an electronic music and arts -- including dance -- event, called (honestly) the Noisily Festival.
