Shotton is one of the few towns in Wales, to have no Welsh form of its name; it's "Shotton" in both tongues. The same essentially goes for Buckley, some three or four miles to the south-west; this settlement's supposed Welsh name "Bwcle" is reckoned to be a legal fiction, as it were; everyone calls the place Buckley, English-style.

St Matthew's Church, Buckley dates from 1821-1822, when the first church on the site was built in to a design by John Oates. He was an English architect born in Salterhebble, near Halifax, West Yorkshire, and was responsible for several churches and other buildings in Huddersfield and the surrounding areas. These include All Saints Church at Paddock (a district of Huddersfield) where he was interred upon his death in 1831.

Association here, a bit railway-ish; but in a "landmark" rather than a "gricing" context, so will hopefully be admissible. Thurstonland lies almost above Brockholes Tunnel, on the Huddersfield -- Penistone line. The larger village of Brockholes, is situated about a mile west of Thurstonland.
