Eastbourne grew as a fashionable tourist resort largely thanks to prominent landowner, William Cavendish, later to become the Duke of Devonshire, who appointed the architect Henry Currey to design a street plan for the town. The traditional burial place of the Dukes of Devonshire is at St Peter's Church, Edensor, the closest village to Chatsworth House.

Coventry is well known for the legendary 11th Century exploits of Lady Godiva who rode through the city naked on horseback in protest at high taxes being levied on the city folk by her husband Leofric, Earl of Mercia. In the 1050s, her name is coupled with that of her husband on a grant of land to the monastery of St. Mary, Worcester and the endowment of the Minster at Stow St Mary, Lincolnshire.
