Frank Hornby, the designer of Hornby model railways, lived in the Maghull area; he based the design for all railway stations for small towns and villages in the Hornby Trainset on Maghull station. In 1931, he entered politics when he was elected as a Conservative MP for the Everton constituency. He did not stay in politics long, however, as he resigned his parliamentary seat before the 1935 General Election.

Stiffkey is remembered as the parish whose rector, Harold Davidson, faced charges of immorality and was defrocked in 1932. He was a popular priest in the area and the villagers asked his family to allow him to be buried in Stiffkey when he died (he was killed, rather improbably, by a lion.), rather than in the family tomb in Sholing, where he was born. The local people have cared for his grave for many years.
