The earliest monument in the small Anglican Parish Church of St. Michael and All Angels to a lord of the manor is to Langford Collin (1700 – 1766), who also owned estates at Beeston and Chilwell.

One of the current major employers in Silvertown is Tate & Lyle PLC at their sugar refinery. The company was formed by the merger of the originally separate companies of Henry Tate and Abram Lyle in 1921. Prior to the merger, which occurred after they had both died, the two men were bitter business rivals, although they had never met in person. Henry Tate was born in the hamlet of White Coppice, near Chorley, Lancashire, on 11th March 1819.

Charles Herbert Lightoller, DSC* RD was born in Chorley on 30th March 1874. He died on 8th December 1952, aged 78. His body was cremated, and his ashes were scattered at the Commonwealth "Garden of Remembrance" at Mortlake Crematorium in Richmond, Surrey.

Lightoller served on the H.M.S. Titanic as Second Officer, and was the most senior crew member to survive the sinking. The First Officer, William McMaster Murdoch, of Dalbeattie, did not survive.

Hampstead is the fictional location of Lucy Westenra's tomb in Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. Lucy lured children to Hampstead Heath at night to drink their blood. During the course of their investigation, Drs. Van Helsing and Seward dined at Jack Straw's Castle and caught a cab near Spaniards Inn. Stoker visited Whitby in 1890, and that visit is said to be part of the inspiration for Dracula.
