Edwinstowe is the nearest place to the Major Oak, where Robin Hood was reputed to have met his men. Headcorn also had a famous oak, but this was burnt down.

Lincoln (Lindum) to York (Eboracum) directly, as Romans liked to do, involved the crossing of the River Humber. Because of the tides, this was inconvenient, so they sought an alternative route via what became known as Danum (Doncaster)
