Aveling & Porter Ltd of Rochester merged with the Peterborough firm of Barford & Perkins Ltd in 1933 to form Aveling-Barford Ltd. As part of the complex deal the firm moved from Kent to occupy 30 acres of land on the Ruston & Hornsby site at Grantham.

The original meaning of llan in Welsh is "an enclosed piece of land", but it later evolved to mean the parish surrounding a church. Most places beginning with Llan have some connection to a saint, usually of the Celtic church. Llan or Lan is a common place name element in Brythonic languages such as Welsh, Cornish, Breton, Cumbric, and possibly Pictish. In Wales there are over 630 place names beginning with 'Llan'. In Cornwall and Brittany the element is usually spelled 'Lan' or 'Lann', occasionally 'Laun'. This gives us places like Lewannick derived from the Cornish: Lannwenek.

Kisimul Castle in Castlebay has been identified as the real-life Ben More Castle in the Tintin story The Black Island. The story ends with a scene set in the zoo in Glasgow.

The Milk Marketing Board sponsored the FA League Cup between 1982 - 1986. This too was known as the 'Milk Cup'. The current holders of its successor, the Carling Cup, are Swansea City.

London also has an Orbital motorway, the M25 (well technically that's not true but I'm not feeling pedantic today!) - Manchester's is the M60.
