Thwing until recently had a pub named The Falling Stone after a local meteorite strike; another place to be so afflicted is Winchcombe in Gloucestershire, hit by the heavenly missile on 28 February 2021. One shudders to think what the inhabitants had been up to to merit that.

Winchcombe is allegedly crossed by no fewer than seven long-distance footpaths, which may account for the town's participation in the 'Walkers Are Welcome' network of towns which promote their facilities for visiting hikers.

Another settlement in the Walkers Are Welcome scheme is Otley in West Yorkshire.

Reading, Berkshire, is also twinned with a settlement in Nicaragua. Swindon's "twin" is Ocotal; Reading's is San Francisco Libre.

Thirsk lies on the stream called the Cod Beck (nothing to do with marine white fish, we learn; it's a variant of "cold"). The Cod Beck flows into the River Swale at Topcliffe, North Yorkshire; some three or four miles southwest of Thirsk.

Some ten days ago, we had flat-cap throwing in the eastern parts of Yorkshire. Learnt just now, that Welbury's village pub "gives land over" to the welly wanging championships. Whereas at Geldeston, Norfolk -- between Beccles and Bungay -- a Saturday in May or June each year, is dedicated to a concentrated bout of the sport, rather "out of the same stable", of dwile-flonking. There's no getting away from it -- the English are weird.

We learn that "dumble" is a dialect word around Southwell, meaning a small wooded area. Dumble Farm at Arram, East Riding of Yorkshire -- north of Beverley -- would seem to do a big business in organising visits in which people can get acquainted with the livestock -- Highland cattle, the farm's speciality.

Chiddingstone is located on the Kentish River Eden (tributary of the Medway). A better-known River Eden, is in England's far north-west; running through Wetheral, Cumbria -- just east of Carlisle.

Stanwix is connected to the rest of Carlisle by a bridge over the River Eden, designed by architect Robert Smirke. Smirke also designed the Westgate Bridge in Gloucester, built 1813-16 to replace a medieval bridge, and itself replaced in 1941.

Presuming that you meant HINCKLEY.....

Aston Flamville in Leicestershire was also once under the jurisdiction of the Hinckley Poor Law Union.

Yaxley, Cambridgeshire -- just south of Peterborough -- also has a church dedicated to St. Peter.

Cirencester in Gloucestershire also has a chippy named Friar Tuck’s.
No doubt presided over, by the Chip-Monk :E ...

Cirencester lies on the River Churn (tributary of the Thames); as does South Cerney, Gloucestershire, a few miles to the south-east. It is reckoned that the names of the river, and of the two settlements, are related -- though "which was called after which, or what", does not seem totally certain.
