Am I supposed to leave a space between the letters and the number, i.e is it SJ 4 or SJ4?
Normal practice is that the prefix (signal box letter or letters or other prefix), the number and any suffix are all treated as one 'word', that is, no spaces between the different parts. Hence it would always be written as "SJ4".

New semaphone stop signal by the Courtyard shopping place, I think SJ 4. Replaces ther one that was held up with bracing. Its fitted with a white sighting plate, retangular, behind the signal arm.
I can confirm that it is SJ4 signal. It was renewed because the soft embankment couldn’t support the weight of the signal, not due to the condition of the signal itself. I believe the old post and semaphore have been saved, but I’m unsure as to where it’s going specifically.
