Settle-Ilkley

Is a single from Settle-Ilkley valid via Leeds or do you have to change at Shipley?

The Settle-Ilkley fare is higher than the settle-Leeds fare.

I am travelling from Settle & want to visit Leeds to deposit luggage in left luggage facility before getting the train on to Ilkley.
Later that afternoon I will be travelling from Ilkley changing at Leeds onto the KX train with an AP ticket from Ilkley (picking up luggage en route) (was the same fare as from Leeds & helps if NT miss my connections!)
if the settle-ilkley single is not valid via Leeds, presumably need settle-Leeds & leeds-Ilkley singles.

Unfortunately, it seems you have to change at Shipley.

Both Settle and Ilkley have a common routeing point: Hellifield Group. The rule for journeys between stations sharing a common routeing points is:

Common Routeing Points
If the origin and destination have a common routeing point, the permitted route is direct via the shortest distance from the origin to the destination over which a regular scheduled passenger train service operates. No doubling back (passing through the same station twice on a single journey) is allowed which may require customers to change trains short of the routeing point, unless an easement allows a longer alternative route.

Searching for a useful Easement, the best available is:

Journeys from Ilkley, Ben Rhydding, Burley-in-Wharfedale, Menston and Guisely may go via Leeds or Bradford on tickets to Lancaster and destinations beyond Lancaster. This easement applies in both directions.

My interpretation of the Easement is that you would be allowed to travel via Leeds to Ilkley on a longer distance ticket, eg. from Lancaster, but not on a shorter distance ticket, eg. from Settle.

thanks for your reply.
I suspect that you are right, even though the NXEC online journey planner lets you put via Leeds & gives you trains times & the same fare.

technically does this actually count as doubling back - although you use the same section of track twice if you go via Leeds, you do not go through any stations twice.

I have emailed Nothern customer relations for clarification - I'll post up when I get a reply.

it's not the 'doubling back' - as there is a common routeing point you must either take the shortest route, or possibly travel via the common routeing point.
