Settle - Carlisle routing for Edinburgh to Burton on Trent

I'm looking to travel on an off peak return from Edinburgh to Burton on Trent with one way via Settle/Carlisle and the other via ECML I've never used the national routing guide before so I'm unclear whether this is feasible. It is not very user friendly to a first time user. Can anyone help.

It looks like it's possible to Derby (with the TC Thames Clyde code) but not Burton? Have I got this right. If so, I may purchase a Derby ticket, and a separate one for Derby - BoT.

How about Tamworth as a destination? Is this only valid via ECML and WCML, but not Settle-Carlisle. Therefore I could use it via ECML with stopovers etc and only use as far as BoT.

Yes, that's permitted. Burton-on-Trent is not a Routeing Point in its own right - it is related to Derby, Tamworth, Nottingham and Lichfield Routeing Points. It passes the fares check for all four RPs so all can be used.

Permitted routes from Derby and Nottingham RPs include travel via the S&C on map TC, as you correctly identify. Other valid routes include the ECML definitely as far as Doncaster, and theoretically as far as Grantham.

However, the latter is only valid if you use Nottingham RP, so if you wanted to return to Burton, you'd have to go to Nottingham and then use the Castle Donington route from Attenborough onwards, which only sees diverted late night/morning Derby <-> St Pancras, and occasional XC trains, by way of a passenger service.

If you use Tamworth RP (i.e. start/finish by travelling Burton-Tamworth) you can't use the S&C, only the WCML or ECML.
