On BBC news it mentioned in connection with Euston to Scotland cancellations today that another line had been on use for a short while as a diversionary route but that too had shut . Anyone know what ? Presume the S& C is no longer available even to diesel Voyagers as I don’t think it’s been used for years as a diversionary route ?

They were referring to the Northampton loop

It's available in theory, but it's not currently used as it's considered impractical. Even if it were a practical route to use, TransPennine Express no longer have diesel capability on the route*, Avanti West Coast do but not for much longer.

* they are very likely to have again in the future, but there still won't be enough 802s to use for this diversion.

When the S&C has been used for diversions, where do they go/come from at the Southern end? It looks like they would either go from Settle to join/leave the WCML south of Preston via Blackburn, either directly or reversing at Preston to serve there, or probably more impractical would be to reverse at Hellifield or Settle Junction in order to go via Bentham, if serving Lancaster was necessary.

Been a few years since I've last been on a Saturday/Sunday WCML service diverted via the Settle & Carlisle, but departing Carlisle, it was non-stop between Carlisle and Preston, (via Appleby, Settle, Hellifield, Clitheroe, Blackburn and Farington Curve Junction).

via Clitheroe, usually reversing at Preston

I'm not convinced that mk3 coaches would get round the curve onto the Bentham line at Carnforth

Back in Virgin Cross Country days, some of the Birmingham-Manchester-Scotland services got diverted from Bolton via Darwen to Blackburn, then Hellifield and Carlisle. Most services however were routed preston-Blackburn-Hellifield-Carlisle.
I don't recall the Carnforth-Hellifield line ever being used for diversions.

Virgin West Coast Preston crew were the last to sign the route, and that stopped a good few years ago, probably around 2015.

It's also very slow, around 3 hours between Preston and Carlisle, assuming you got a decent path. Last time I did it, pre 2010, we stood at Settle Junction southbound for about 20 minutes waiting for a train off the Bentham line.

It's far quicker, weather permitting, to bus passengers up the M6.

Does the connection at Hellifield not face the wrong way for that to be convenient? Necessitating a reversal at Hellifield?

Thank you both for confirming

It does, the reason I highlighted that route would be if, depending on the mainline closure, serving Lancaster was deemed necessary.

Presumably the lengthy signal headways on the S&C don't help with diversion journey times, nor the max 60mph speed limit.

Grew up next to the Blackburn - Hellifield line in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It was freight only then but on Sundays was always used for diversions when the WCML was being electrified.

It was always an exciting day to see prestige passengers trains on our line, usually hauled by Brush Type 4s, but the absolute highlight was to see the latest D400 brand spanking new out of the works on a late afternoon northbound working. There was also a southbound Freightliner working, the only regular container train I have seen on the line.

We played football and cricket in a field close to the line watching the trains go past

Great memories and great days.

Can't remember whether Lancaster was served just by bus along the A6/M6 and/or Preston -> Barrow-in-Furness rail services. Probably depended on where along the WCML the weekend engineering work was taking place. Often the route was kept open until midday on Saturday before closing for the remainder of the weekend.

Presumably the lengthy signal headways on the S&C don't help with diversion journey times, nor the max 60mph speed limit.
If memory serves, typical journey times between Carlisle and Preston (via the Settle and Carlisle) were at least always twice that of the more usual WCML route via Penrith.

Yes, this thing about it taking longer to divert (particularly in relation to the WCML and the S&C) is one of those fixations the industry has which I very much doubt is shared by passengers (who would just rather get one train and not get on and off buses). Presumably its more about the industry not wanting the rigmarole to divert and offering this as a justification.

Yep. On a wet and windy Saturday evening, would much prefer to stay on a diverted Anglo Scottish train despite the extended journey time, rather than change onto a bus, mid journey, provided that the arrival time (at Preston) wasn't then too late for onward connections.

Reversing at Hellifield is not permitted by passenger trains, you'd need staff on the ground to clip up the points.

If the journey time is significantly longer, then the train can't make its next working and you need either more units or less schedules. Voyagers aren't just lying around, and neither are drivers, while less schedules is just as disruptive to passengers, if not more so.

Understandable, but on the other hand: Way back in 1984, I travelled one Sunday on a Glasgow-Euston service which was diverted via both Kilmarnock/Dumfries and the Settle & Carlisle; It took 6 hours to get to Preston ! A coach up the M74/A74/M6 would have been much quicker.....

There are generally running fewer trains at this stage anyway, so better to run fewer trains than none.

The track layout and signalling at Hellifield does not allow passenger-carrying trains to/from the North to reverse there. You would have to run past the junction to a point beyond the South end crossover on either the Skipton or Blackburn line, change ends and then come back through the road with the facing points clipped and padlocked and a handsignaller in attendence. It would be quicker to reverse at Settle Junction, although you would still need a handsignaller for the crossover points if coming from the Carlisle direction. Mark 3 stock is permitted through the sharply-curved Furness line platforms at Carnforth - as those of us who were on the "Cumbrian Whistler" railtour on 28th August can testify. Not sure about the curve to/from the former Carnforth East Junction....although it's very sharp, there are no physical obstacles in the way.

If diversionary capability were really what were wanted too, you wouldn't look at improving the S&C. It would make rather more sense to improve the permissible speed between Lancashire and Yorkshire. The route via Copy Pit is only up to 70 at its best but lower for large chunks. Engineering wise an expensive job to improve though I'm sure.

When the Brighton Line is closed south of Three Bridges, Brighton services are diverted via Horsham, Littlehampton and then all stations to Brighton. They also offer a non stop bus from Three Bridges to Brighton as well as an all stations bus. I'd say that more than half the Brighton Passengers get off to get the bus which saves around 30 mins.

Loads of intermediate block stuff put in when there were many coal trains. all those coal train paths are there for the taking. Blackburn - clitheroe may be more of an issue.

I am not sure Hellifield can reverse trains. It cant reverse the winter Preston - Hellifield Dales rail trains - they go to Settle Jct. Whether they can reverse trains from the West I dont know.

Sorry, but I can't see how improving Copy Pit would help diversionary capability for Anglo-Scottish trains, for unless you reversed at Blackburn[and then over the S&C], you would end up at Preston.

Re memories of Virgin diversions, I once managed, way back, to go from Crewe via Styal, through Manchester Piccadilly to Bolton, Darwen, Blackburn, Hellifield and the S&C, and then, as an added bunus, over the G & SW via Dumfries to Glasgow!! Quite a trip.

I remember having most of coach D of the Voyager to myself, and the Train Manager being rather taken aback on apologising for the lengthy journey by my response that no apology was necessary as I wouldn't have been onboard otherwise!

Simply to run faster trains between York and Preston, but the reality is that even that would probably still be slower than using the M6.

They can, I've been on a southbound sleeper that ran main line to Carnforth then a pair of 20s took us via Bentham and Clitheroe to Preston.

There used to be one on Sunday mornings in the early 80s from Glasgow Central that clearly went via the S&C, including an advertised call at Blackburn. This was in the days of the old manual departure board at Central. I don’t recall if it went via Kilmarnock as well.

1970s I went on a Sunday morning Liverpool to Edinburgh service that took a tremendous diversion route, including the freight-only old line from Ditton Junction to St Helens which hadn't seen a passenger train for years. At Preston, reversing to go via the Settle & Carlisle, passengers joined from a Manchester connection, including those sat across who had started from Bolton - having been driven there from Blackburn by friends. They were not at all impressed, about two hours after setting out, to be passing back through Blackburn again ...

Since the 2018 resignalling of the Calder Valley Line East of Hebden Bridge, substantial stretches between there and Bradford Interchange now permit 75-80 mph for multiple unit trains. Not sure how that would help with Anglo-Scottish diversions though!

It was. Likewise Oxenholme and Penrith. There were buses that called at the intermediate stations while others went non-stop to Carlisle.
