Was it a class 150? Your ears would be ringing after six hours of engine thrash!
Class 175 both ways, thankfully.

Another interesting one to add - the "coast to coast" service from Penzance to St Ives.

Surprisingly few, actually. Reading-Manchester Piccadilly is the longest one I can think of, although now they've almost all started running to Bournemouth again, I'm not sure whether I should count it! The next longest one that springs to mind is Leicester-Lincoln.

If we are including international trips then Turnhout to Blankenberge in Belgium is one of the most interesting I have done, mainly because I was in the cab of the class 25 loco throughout. I expected to be booted out after a few stops but the driver was happy to chat for the whole two hour trip. It was a summer additional to get people to the seaside. All sorts of weird and wonderful locos and units went to Blankenberge on those trains.

I've probably not done a great deal of end-to-end journeys compared to most people on the forums, and you will be able to tell where most of my rail journeys are made just by looking at my list, but here it goes anyway as far as I can remember. All of these journeys will be return journeys unless marked with an asterisk.
  • Liverpool Lime Street - Warrington Bank Quay (when there was a limited daytime service back in the early 2010s)*
  • Liverpool Lime Street - Wigan Northern Western
  • Liverpool Lime Street - Newcastle
  • Liverpool Lime Street - Glasgow Central
  • Liverpool Lime Street - Birmingham New Street
  • Liverpool Lime Street - London Euston
  • Birmingham New Street - London Euston*
  • Manchester Piccadilly - London Euston via Crewe*
  • London Euston - Manchester Piccadilly via Stoke*
  • London Euston - Glasgow Central via Trent Valley*
  • London St Pancras - Paris Gare du Nord
  • Roma Termini - Napoli Centrale

I believe I've done Frankfurt Hbf to Vienna Westbahnhof in one go, ISTR the service did originate from Frankfurt Hbf. That was certainly the longest ever continuous train journey I've ever done at some 7hrs, IIRC it left Frankfurt at 1416, yet it was dark when it got to Vienna and this was July.

Others I can think of; most fairly obvious but one or two esoteric ones in there. Oddly a disproportionately high percentage are not in the UK, even though the overwhelming majority of my train travel has been in the UK.

Euston-Manchester Piccadilly
Euston-Glasgow Central
Kings Cross-Leeds
Kings Cross-Edinburgh
Waterloo International-Paris Nord
St Pancras-Paris Nord
St Pancras-Brussels Midi
Paris Lyon-Nice Ville, possibly (can't remember if the service terminated there, I think it did)
Brussels-Amsterdam Centraal (the classic loco-hauled service)
Southampton Central-Portsmouth and Southsea stopper
Brockenhurst-Lymington Pier
Probably used a Southampton Central-Brockenhurst stopping shuttle end-to-end at some point in the 90s while it existed, but can't recall a specific occasion
Basingstoke-Reading stopper
Redhill-Tonbridge possibly. September 2000, on a 508, was heading for Ashford to pick up Eurostar due to severe disruption (bomb scare, possibly) at Waterloo. Can't remember whether the service originated from London or extended beyond Tonbridge, though; some years they extended to Tunbridge Wells or Strood.
Twyford-Henley
Maidenhead-Marlow
Possibly Marylebone-Birmingham Moor Street, depending on whether the service then went on to Snow Hill. Can't remember
Bad Krozingen-Münstertal
Berchtesgaden-Freilassing
Waterloo-Guildford via Staines and Ascot. Actually did this one Saturday in May 1988 in its entirety, wanting to sample the new all-day through service and travel on some as-yet-unused lines. Did it on multiple tickets I believe, splitting at Clapham and Richmond to avoid any validity problems. Did it both ways but broke journey at Clapham on the way up (as I wanted to spend some hours there; hence the Clapham ticket) before then heading onto Waterloo on a Clapham-Waterloo return to join the down service all the way back to Guildford in one go.

Fascinating topic, one which has got the memory going and, while thinking of what I’ve done in the past for this post, the nostalgia too. By no means is this an exhaustive list, it will no doubt miss a few bits I’ve done in the distant past or indeed ones more recent which I just don’t remember. It has been more than 22 years since I first started travelling on trains for fun after all!

So without further ado, in no particular order whatsoever, let’s see what I can remember:

- Swansea to London Paddington (too many times to count!)
- Hereford to London Paddington
- Hereford to Birmingham New Street (way too many times!)
- Cardiff Central to Nottingham (way back in 2004 I do believe, when there were some major works in the Derby area and my 170/5, which I believe was 170505, went via Castle Donnington. Experienced my first 5mph TSR I believe that day too)
- Nottingham to Cardiff Central (same day, on a Central Trains 158 which unlike the 170/5 went via Derby. So maybe not some big blockade? This was over 21 years ago now, so I genuinely don’t know)
- Manchester Piccadilly to Cardiff Central (way back in the mid 2000s when it was almost always 158s and they terminated in Cardiff)
- Cardiff Central to Rhymney, as well as to Treherbert and Aberdare and Merthyr Tydfil, all back in the mid 2000s. Far too many weird and wonderful services done on the Valleys back then, including a super early morning Cardiff to Caerphilly train which ran non-stop.
***Let’s find some more modern ones***
- Maesteg to Ebbw Vale Town (I had a lot of miles on 197123 that day, thank Goodness for the bigger Standard Plus seats!)
***nah, back to nostalgia***
- London Paddington to Penzance on an ALR in 2011
- London Kings Cross to Inverness on the Highland Chieftain in 2007
- Inverness to London Kings Cross, also on the Highland Chieftain in 2007
- Birmingham New Street to London Euston on 350s via Northampton (too often to count)
- London Euston to Birmingham New Street via Northampton on 350s, again too often to count
- Birmingham New Street to London Euston and indeed back on Virgin/Avanti West Coast, better on fast 390s than the slower 807s or, as I had once, a solo 805
- Newcastle to Ashington and back (outwards on a 156, the return half an hour later after sourcing a chippy tea on a 158. I’m told 156s on that line aren’t too common)
- Birmingham New Street to Glasgow Central (back when Virgin hadn’t linked up that route with the one from London) (a journey on 221137 which I still remember fondly to this day and remains my favourite 221)

***you’ll probably notice a mix of long ago and more recent services here, I’m dashing between the two eras quite a bit as I type***

- Norwich to London Liverpool Street, specifically done on, I believe, the 1700 at the time back in 2004 because it had a restaurant service. Not that I went and investigated the restaurant! I don’t even remember what loco type was in use at the time, was it all 86s or were they on the way out? I remember just missing an 86 at London on the outward but I wasn’t very good at noting my haulages back then.
- Portsmouth and Southsea to Brighton at the end of 2025, it was supposed to be from Portsmouth Harbour but signalling issues put most trains into Southsea’s bay platforms instead. That was all stations except Hilsea, oh my that dragged on!
- Back when 377s dominated the BML, Brighton to London Victoria and, almost certainly, the other way too.
- Another nostalgia one would be from 2007, when First Capital Connect had been selling or giving away special tickets. I’d hoped for 319s at the time, would have waited for some but there were issues on FCC that day so I ended up doing East Croydon to Brighton on 377/5s then almost immediately after did Brighton to Bedford on a triple 377/5 working. I was glad to see Bedford after that, I can assure you!
- London St Pancras to Sheffield, via Toton, on the 2011 ALR. One of the few times I actually enjoyed a 222!
- London Euston to Holyhead, in 2008 when it was a 390 to Crewe then a 57/3 onwards to Holyhead. I also did the return the next day, a trip I remember well for trying and instantly hating kiwi!
- Carmarthen to Shrewsbury via the Heart of Wales (having got to Carmarthen off the 0150 Fishguard Harbour to Swansea boat train) many years back. This was when there were those orange-liveried 153s promoting the Heart of Wales line. Slept much of it from what I recall, did the same route back but to Swansea and probably slept most of that too!
- London Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport on 379s in 2011
- Aberdeen to Glasgow Queen Street on the 2022 FC ALR
- Glasgow Queen Street to Inverness, also on the 2022 ALR
- Aberdeen to Inverness, on the 2022 ALR (I did a lot of ScotRail HST action that week!)
- Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh, back when there were still 158s with ex-First ScotRail First Class seats on the line. 2006 I think this was.
- Oban to Glasgow Queen Street on 156457 in February 2006, after doing the diverted Caledonian Sleeper to Oban with a 37/4. Ooh I can still feel the chill on the face from taking photos at the droplight on the sleeper! The 156 I don’t remember much about, 99% sure this was part of a forum meet at the time.
- I am 99% sure I’ve done Birmingham New Street to Liverpool Lime Street in one go in the distant past too, however I’m not sure right now.
- Birmingham Moor Street to London Marylebone, and indeed the reverse journey, a handful of times. Indeed, once on a Sunday I did London Marylebone to Birmingham Snow Hill on a 165!
- Carlisle to Leeds via Settle
- Bidston to Wrexham Central (did that on a 197 in the dark, not terribly exciting)

Most of the other ones will be branch line trips, things like a 156 from Norwich to Sheringham or 153s from the bay platform at Great Yarmouth. More recently I guess would be Ipswich to Peterborough a few years back on a 755. There have been a lot where I got close to finishing an entire journey but bailing out near the end, usually for things like ticking off a station. Two massive examples would be Swansea to Pembroke on a 150, to tick the town’s station rather than the terminus. I never did reach Pembroke Dock on a 150! Similar, also in the mid 2000s, I did the last Swansea to Milford Haven of the day - remember this was well before 175s arrived and all the through running options - which was a 153 and I bailed at Johnston to tick off the station. Never did finish clearing the branch for 153 coverage!

To be honest, I don’t know if there are any others on a purely UK basis. If we include Europe, then I’ve got:

- London St Pancras to Amsterdam Centraal on Eurostar, and the return journey a few days later in 2023. 374s both ways (no chance of a 373)
- London St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord, and the return journey, in spring 2025. 374s both ways.
- London St Pancras to Bruxelles Midi and the return journey, I think that was 2013 but I may be wrong. 2014 possibly. I think that was my last 373!
- Nice Ville to Paris Gare de Lyon in December 2024 (connecting onto Eurostar to London) which was a long one, nearly 6 hours on a TGV.

There are some journeys I’d like to do end to end, just for the fun of it. One of these I *should* be doing later this year:
- Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh (one I think I’ve done but not certain, as I think I would have started or bailed at Haymarket, and in any case I’d like to do it again on a 385)
- London Euston to Glasgow Central on a service which is non-stop to Warrington for maximum speed and tiltage
- Birmingham New Street to Stansted Airport
- Liverpool Lime Street to Norwich
- Manchester Airport to Holyhead
- Birmingham New Street to Pwllheli, ideally before the 197s take over
- Bournemouth to Manchester Piccadilly
- Banbury to London Paddington on the direct IET if it still runs
- Manchester Airport to Windermere
- Liverpool Lime Street to Newcastle
- Chester to Leeds

As I said ages ago, when I first started typing this, I don’t believe this is an exhaustive list by any means. I haven’t included things like Liverpool Lime Street to New Brighton or Chester, or indeed Southport to Liverpool Central and Hunts Cross to Ormskirk at the end of 2025. There’s just so much to list I’ll be here all day going through it all!

I think that will do, I’ve been at this for well over an hour now!

I have done too many end-to-end journeys to recall. However I have just realised that on a trip I took in October, every single train journey I made was from the starting point to the final destination. I didn't design it to be this way, it is just a coincidence. (I also did some legs by plane and by bus.)
Prague hl. n. to Graz
Graz to Maribor
Zagreb Gl. K. to Vinkovci
Vinkovci to Osijek
Osijek to Beli Manastir
Beli Manastir to Pécs
Pécs to Budapest Keleti

This is probably cheating as it wasn't a service train, but I have travelled from one end (I think the south) to the other of Mossend Yard!

I went out to the yard on the bus and asked for permission to visit the depot. This was given and, when I went to say thank you, one of the staff asked me whether I'd like to have a ride on a loco up to the other end. It didn't take long for me to say "yes", so I was told to join one of the drivers on (I think - I've got no records of it now, sadly!) a Class 40 which had to go to the other end.

It obviously didn't take long, but got better, as I was then given a lift in the crew van into Edinburgh, where I was dropped off behind Waverley station!

Plenty, so here are edited highlights:

Services where it's not easy to get off halfway:
  • Chester - Crewe
  • Stourbridge Shuttle
  • Cardiff Queen St - Cardiff Bay
Services where most people go the full length:
  • St Erth - St Ives
  • Liskeard - Looe
More unusual services that exist purely due to engineering work:
  • Glasgow Central - Carlisle via Lockerbie
  • Carlisle - Wigan NW via Settle
  • Chester - Liverpool James St (when the loop was closed)
  • Inverurie - Inverness
Regularly timetabled services:
  • Manchester - Hadfield via Glossop
  • Penzance - London Paddington
  • Leeds - Bradford FS
  • Bradford Interchange - London KX (never again!)

Hereford to Paddington has been quite regular for me, though the evening return back to Hereford feels, to me, to be two services: commuter service as far as Kingham, then country railway from there onwards.

And in about 2015 I did Hamburg to Copenhagen return, via the Puttgarden ferry. No restaurant car, but a restaurant boat on that service.

Inverness to Glasgow Queen St followed by Glasgow Central to London Euston after a hour stopover in Glasgow.

Glasgow Central to Carlisle (via Kilmarnock & GSW main line), much to the astonishment of the train "conductor".

Tyne & Wear Metro from South Shields to St James and South Hylton to Airport - both sitting in the front seat! Sadly not possible in the new 555 stock.

Too many to list, but selected lengthy ones:
Oakland - Chicago
New Orleans - Los Angeles
Brisbane - Sydney
Melbourne - Sydney
München Ost - Hamburg Altona
King's Cross - Inverness
Euston - Inverness
Penzance - Dundee

And the shortest one:
Friedrichshafen Hafen - Friedrichshafen Stadt (and it was loco-hauled, too!)

As I haven't edited my initial list, the longest ones by mileage I've done end-to-end are
  • Wien Hbf – Amsterdam Centraal (1293 km)
  • Berlin Hbf – Zürich HB
  • London Euston – Glasgow Central (Sleeper via the WCML, Edinburgh and I think Falkirk Grahamston)
  • Edinburgh Waverley – London Kings Cross
  • London St. Pancras International – Amsterdam Centraal
  • Penzance – London Paddington via Bristol Temple Meads
Of my twenty-five longest journeys (not counting ones done multiple times separately), nineteen weren't all of the service.

Added Brighton to Portsmouth & Southsea on today’s 1128 from Brighton to my list, a nice long run on a 377/3 that was and it went by surprisingly fast.

All being well, I’m about to add Portsmouth Harbour to Cardiff Central to my list. Just passed Stoke Gifford so it should happen, I’m not going to miss the racket of the AC that’s for sure. Or, indeed, how cold it’s been on this train. Brr!

This is a fun one. I've never really thought about it before. Journeys are one-direction unless specified.

Greater Anglia
London Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport
Stansted Airport to Norwich
Norwich to Sheringham (both ways)
Norwich to Great Yarmouth (both ways)
Norwich to Lowestoft (both ways)
London Liverpool Street to Norwich (strangely only one direction)
Ipswich to Lowestoft (both ways)
Ipswich to Felixstowe (both ways)
Ipswich to Cambridge (both ways)
Manningtree to Harwich Town (both ways)
London Liverpool Street to Ipswich
Cambridge to London Liverpool Street (both ways)

I have also done Ipswich to Ely on a rail replacement day, so that was the end-to-end journey.

London Northwestern Railway
Euston to Crewe

Avanti West Coast
Manchester Piccadilly to Euston

In 1963 I travelled overnight from a desolate St Pancras to Leeds at some ungodly hour (I cannot remember at what time) with the Apsley & Hemel Hempstead Locospotters Society for a trip around Leeds and Bradford sheds.

The journey (on a Sunday) was notable for going north through Oakham and Melton Mowbray, then reversing at Leicester. I dimly remember going past Leicester shed twice in the dark and Ardsley shed just after dawn.

The coming back was by coach with an unscheduled bunk of Colwick shed...

St Pancras to Manchester Piccadilly via Woodhead was a nice one to tick off.

Sunday morning engineering diversion in the mid 70s.

Sadly Peak hauled rather than electric, but can't grumble!

Two which I did a few weeks ago but haven't yet mentioned are Friedrichshafen Hafen – Stadt, and, as I think it's currently planned to go once Stuttgart 26 is done, the regional Ulm – Wendlingen service.

Added a new one to the list a couple of weeks ago, the Vienna - Hamburg (Harburg, due to engineering work) Nightjet. One of the longest services I've ever done. Great fun though in the mini-cabins.
