If we're allowed obscure historical quirks in the thread and trains which started just before a better known station . . .

Through the 1960s - until 1969 I think - two of the morning peak-hour DMUs from Wigan Wallgate to Manchester Victoria started two stations back at the unlikely origin of Orrell (the units having come empty from the DMU depot at Wigan)

One train went to Manchester via the Atherton line, the other via Bolton. There were no corresponding evening terminators at Orrell.

This was well before Greater Manchester County was formed (in 1974) and before any PTE boundaries had been devised, even though today this would make sense as a Garswood-style perk for GMPTE residents.

Back in 2019 for a short time, SWR had a weekday service that ran from Waterloo and terminated at Branksome, one stop after Bournemouth.

More convenient for the depot, you might think, but no, it then formed at Branksome to Southampton service.

How about everything terminating at Cannon St after calling at London Bridge?

I also think pretty much everyone in London knows Cannon Street, whereas most people in the North West couldn't tell you where Headbolt Lane is.

For a few months after the Liverpool Loop opened there were additional peak hour services from Birkenhead North to Heswall (end of administrative boundary)
I recall the trains turned back at Neston which was within the original PTE boundary until the 1974 local government boundaries realigned the PTE to match the Metro County. I also recall variations in 1974 when the original SELNEC boundaries where changed to Greater Manchester Metro County.

People in Kirkby couldn't tell you where Headbolt Lane is.

Yes, to be more precise. some turned at Heswall and some at Neston.

The administrative boundary on the Wirral continues to cause a fair amount of controversy.
