This can be current or historical services. Possible examples Ore (Hastings), Drumgelloch (Airdrie) and Tweedbank (Galashiels).

'Better known' isn't too specific, but based on station usage, Barking Riverside (Barking), Southminster (Burnham-on-Crouch), Hadfield (Glossop), Heysham Port (Morecambe) and Alloa (Stirling) would qualify.
Extend to 2 stations and you can add Gourock (Greenock Central), Dunblane (also Stirling), Sheringham (usage is the same as Cromer, but Cromer is more well-known) and Severn Beach (Avonmouth).

How to present these services on departure boards is a long-running dilemma. How many of the examples in this thread use the '(less known place) via (more known place)' method, and which just show the end destination?

GWR North Downs trains terminating at Shalford vs Guildford. Used to be a regular thing but now only one train a day.

Bedwyn vs Newbury/Hungerford.

I would have thought Sheringham would be better known amongst rail enthusiasts because of the excellent North Norfolk Railway?

Over on the Speculation/Fantasy thread, talk often suggests a new station at Oakley (one stop past Basingstoke) as a "better" place to terminate the Basingstoke stoppers...

Arguably Llandudno Junction (a small settlement of its own named after the station) over Conwy (historically if not in the current timetable).

Chester is bigger and more famous (except possibly among railway enthusiasts) than Crewe is.

I think at various points there have also been Greenbank terminators.

Oxenholme over Kendal is another one.

Indeed, but rail enthusiasts make up just a small percentage of the UK population :)
I'd wager that the average person is more likely to have heard of Cromer than Sheringham. Cromer's been decently popular since the Victorian era and has its signature crabs, while Sheringham's just a standard charming seaside town with a heritage railway.

Another two for the list: Rose Hill Marple (Romiley) and Knottingley (Pontefract Monkhill)

On another recent thread, we established that there is a daily ScotRail midweek working from North Berwick at 0718 (SX, SuX) that terminates at Haymarket, rather than at Edinburgh Waverley.

I can think of all of the following examples:

• Abbey Wood (Woolwich)

• Aylesbury Vale (Aylesbury)

• Barking Riverside (Barking)

• Cambridge North (Cambridge)

• Falmouth Docks (Falmouth Town)

• Farnham (Aldershot)

• Fishguard Harbour (Fishguard Goodwick)

• Heysham Port (Morecambe)

• Hunts Cross (Liverpool South)

• Larne Harbour (Larne Town)

• Lymington Pier (Lymington Town)

• Newhaven Harbour (Newhaven Town)

• Ore (Hastings)

• Rainham (Gillingham)

• Reigate (Redhill)

• Shalford (Guildford)

• Shenfield (Brentwood)

• South Croydon (East Croydon)

• Southminster (Burnham On Crouch)

• West Worthing (Worthing)

The first station is the smaller place that the train terminates at and the second station in brackets is the larger place which is the stop before.

Lichfield Trent Valley is after Lichfield City
Rugely Trent Valley after Rugeley Town

At a stretch possibly, leamington is after the county town of Warwick. Arguably Warwick with its castle and being the county town of Warwickshire is better well known than Leamington

Luton isn't a quiet station, but does have substantially fewer passengers than Luton Airport Parkway.

Tring in place of Hemel Hempstead is another one which could be added if going for two stations further.

Stratford International rather than tube, Overground, Elizabeth Line and (other) National Rail services for DLR services via West Ham.

Torquay and Paignton have similar populations, Paignton more rail passengers, and Torquay probably a bigger cultural impact (Fawlty Towers), so I think it counts.

I think of Cardiff Bay before the city centre (Queen Street, with far more passengers) when thinking of Cardiff; I don't know if that holds for people living or frequently in Cardiff.

Leamington Spa is itself a big town with lots of its own history and amenities.

Probably more populous than Warwick but I would have to check.

Would Wrexham Central count? The main station is Wrexham General, annoyingly I don't have my list to hand to see which is busier but just based on the amount of routes serving it is say General.

Haverfordwest and Milford Haven.

Pembroke and Pembroke Dock.

Birmingham New Street and Birmingham International (TfW services).

Whilst trains don’t actually terminate there, Chandlers Ford is the advertised terminus from Salisbury/Romsey over Eastleigh or Romsey. Chandler’s Ford is used to prevent passengers boarding/staying on the long way round the loop. Same as Redbridge and Southampton Central for trains Salisbury in the other direction.

Another historic example would be Balloch Pier (Balloch) for the few trains wihich had Loch Lomond steamer connections. A historic example of trains terminating one station before the "normal" terminus would be Craigendoran (Helensburgh Central) for trains which had Clyde steamer connections. Happy for my original post to be flexible rather than too prescriptive given its context of being trivia.

Alderley Edge, which was the de facto 'terminus' of the Styal line (pre-airport station) is a smaller town and station than Wilmslow.
