I've heard of EMT HST's to skegness on summer saturdays, i was wondering off anymore and any timings for these unique services.

Thanks

Well it's not an entirely new service that only runs during summer but EMT do extend their weekend St Pancras to York (via Sheffield) all the way out to Scarborough during the summer months.

Hourly trains to Severn Beach on Sundays in the Summer timetable until Sept only. Rest of the year on Sundays there are only 2 trains per day to Severn Beach.

Also Paddington to Newquay and XC run trains from the north to Newquay in Summer only.

Paddington to Pembroke Dock is a summer Saturdays only job, seem to recall it's about 0745 off Paddington, 15xx back I believe. Morning Pembroke Dock to Paddington is formed off a Swansea to Pembroke Dock HST, which used to be 07xx off Swansea.

Can't think of any others at the moment.

Okehampton? Does that still run?

Summer Sundays only Exeter St James Park to Okehampton - which still ran last summer, so wether or not itll be running again this summer will be interesting to see, though by the continuing problems in D&C Railways, the FGW Sundays only service will be back!

Newcastle - Whitby via Middlesbrough on summer Sundays. Was running last year and assume it will be again this year. Only done it once - all the way there and back on a 142. Magic.

Wasn't there a recent edition last year from Scotrail? Edinburgh to Fort Willam?

Perhaps with the Government seeking to mess around with Bank Holidays to "extend" the summer, thought should be given to lengthen the summer timetable from the start of April to the end of October.

I could see a case for extending the summer timetable from end of May to end of September but start of April to end of October seems like overkill that's 7 months of 'summer'!

Also EMT to Cleethorpes.

EMT run through to Cleethorpes on weekdays throughout the year! 04:42 Lincoln - Cleethorpes ECS move, 05:49 Cleethorpes - Newark Northgate, 19:24 Newark Northgate - Cleethorpes & 21:15 Cleethorpes - Lincoln runs Monday - Friday all year.

However, what is unique is a Summer Sundays Nottingham - Cleethorpes via Lincoln & Newark Northgate through service (13:56 Cleethorpes - Nottingham & 15:29 Nottingham - Cleethorpes).

I should be more clear and added Sunday EMT services {of any kind} on the line through Market Rasen. I used to be a very frequent user of the service that left Market Rasen at 1859, it was alway a lot more busy on a Sunday than its equivalent weekday service!

The Chester to Runcorn (Main Line) route has one service per week on Saturday mornings, (summer only) using the uni-directional Halton Curve

This thread would have been a really big one 25 or years ago!

25 years ago this thread would have been a book called "Loco Hauled Travel"

Anyone else remember these books that were published every year with diagrams etc?

Yeah too right remember all the summer only diagrams Mk1s and Mk2s loco hauled all the way, now the railways are just so dull and sterile, its hard to be enthusiastic about railways these days apart from the odd railtour its dull

This thread would have been a really big one 25 or years ago!

Just for some info, these are taken from the Summer 1984 timetable

2030 Newcastle - Newquay 0822
2136 Nottingham - Newquay 0655
2143 Manchester P - Newquay 0633
2210 Edinburgh / 2220 Glasgow C - Paignton 0806
2217 Manchester P - Penzance 0843
2230 Manchester P - Poole 0720
2231 Leeds - Portsmouth 0620
2235 Newcastle - Paignton 0716
2237 Bradford Int - Paignton 0642
2315 Liverpool - Penzance 0901
2315 Edinburgh / 2325 Glasgow C - Paignton 0934 (Sleeper)
2330 Manchester P - Paignton 0623

These were the Friday only services. All loco hauled. Some compartment stock, some non-aircon Mk2's if memory serves, probably some air-con too.

This era (mid 80's) was the start of my real affection with railways and used to love the overnighters to the south from Newcastle. Always busy, even had HST's in the years after this on them.
