Blimey, all these extra services via Birmingham New Street mean someone needs to figure out how to double the size of the station and double the amount of lines in and out

Ready-made answer in Snow Hill. Rebuild the section to Wolves LL, then divert all Shrewsbury etc traffic that way, including existing services. You would have to work out a way of reconnecting the line through the developments at Low Level, but there is probably enough room alongside the tram line for a pair of heavy-rail lines.

One service that should exist is a connection of holyhead for the 0020 boat connection!! It should be re-instated. Maybe a holyhead to manchester/birmingham??

i dont think there is much room between the hawthorns and wolverhampton for a heavy rail line..

I had a similar idea, only I would run it via Heathrow (or at least Reading) to cover both major London airports. It could probably replace the XC Reading-Manchester service.

The Royal Wessex Waterloo-Weymouth Quay/Swanage
Pretty much self-explanatory. Worked by spare 422s (if there are any) with the diesel sections hauled by Class 33s. Would have to fettle up the Tramway in places, but the idea is to connect to the Weymouth ferries and link Swanage back to the nation network. FGW could also extend the Torbay Express to Kingswear on a similar principle.

Why?

Glasgow and Edinburgh are connected via the Falkirk and Shotts lines, and soon the North Clyde Line.

Motherwell and Edinburgh are connected via East Coast, ScotRail 1x North Berwick EMU and soon, CrossCountry will be replacing most of EC services.

All stations between Livingston North and Slateford see regular Shotts line services to Edinburgh and Glasgow.

London - Edinburgh is served well by East Coast. XC also serve North England with Edinburgh trains as does Transpennine, and Virgin run Birmingham services to both Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Virgin did run Pendolino services from Euston into Edinburgh, and it was poorly used as Londoners oppted for the East Coast Main Line instead and East Coast are pulling out of trains to Glasgow via Carstairs because of low passenger numbers between the cities on that route.

Cheltenham to Evesham. Fancied visiting there the other week so I looked up the time table for direct trains. Turns out the quickest is 2 hours 34 minutes by way of Reading. They are less than 20 miles apart for heavens sake.:roll:

I can only hope the thought will occur to them in future when the Honeybourne Line is reconnected, a direct service to the Cotswold line might actually get used.

No hope in reconstructing the line in South Nottingham - its been built over and the bridge over the TRent replaced by a road! Could just run via the Systen north curve and serve Loughborough and/or East Midlands Parkway??.

Much better would be a London St Pancras to Glasgow service via Corby, Sheffield, Leeds, Carlisle and Kilmarnock - the "Thames-Clyde Express" recreated! There's lots of Glaswegians in Corby who came down to work at the steel works, I'm sure a joint enterprise could be donew??

I dont know, unlike most of the preservation lines around its got potential through route. You couldnt have a high frequency of services admittedly, but then it probably wouldnt require them. I certainly wouldnt advocate stopping anywhere but Cheltenham high street.
It would perhaps be easier to have a cross connection to the Cotswold line to the old midlands line to Birmingham admittedly. Failing that reversing at Worcester would also be a solution. It has to be a better option than reversing at Reading.
